The Internet of Things is a myriad of protocols, platforms and standards. Of course, there’s no need to know about any of this in order to control your central heating system with an app, or switch on your lighting from your iPhone, but for those with an interest in IoT technology we’ve pulled together some introductory technical information on what makes IoT tick…
Underlying the IoT are the protocols, or rules, that govern the exchange or transmission of data between devices. Above this layer are the platforms, or frameworks, that build on these protocols and provide the architecture and services to IoT applications… And finally there are the standards groups, or alliances, who are attempting to define and agree on the best of these technologies to build the IoT of the future.
We appreciate there’s some overlap between all these areas but we’ve attempted to categorise them as best we can. We understand there will be those who disagree with our groupings. We also apologise for any omissions, but welcome your suggestions.
