IBM Watson Internet of Things enables users to set up and manage IoT connected devices via Bluemix, its hybrid cloud platform as a service (PaaS) development platform. IBM Watson users receive device management, real-time data exchange, secure communications and data storage. Device data is sent securely to the cloud using the open, lightweight MQTT messaging protocol.
In January 2016 IBM announced the acquisition of The Weather Company, adding weather and data sensor data to its Watson IoT service.
IBM and its clients are ushering in a new cognitive era. IBM Watson IoT Platform extends the power of cognitive computing to the Internet of Things—billions of connected devices, sensors and systems that comprise the IoT.
Watson IoT is a set of capabilities that learn from, and infuse intelligence into, the physical world. The Internet of Things-generated data is growing twice as fast as social and computer-generated data, and it is extremely varied, noisy, time-sensitive and often confidential. Complexity grows as billions of devices interact in a moving world. This presents a growing challenge that will test the limits of programmable computing. Cognitive IoT is our best opportunity to fully exploit this resource. – (Watson Internet of Things)
