Tesla says all electric cars it now builds will have hardware to drive completely on their own, though fully self-driving cars are still years away.

Tesla founder Elon Musk said its hardware was “basically a super-computer in a car,” but added it would be up to regulators and the public to decide when self-driving vehicles could actually be used on the roads.

Later this month Uber will be bringing a fleet of cars with its automated driving technology to customers in Pittsburgh, USA. The fleet will initially be supervised by humans in the driver’s seat, but nonetheless this is an important milestone that no other automotive or technology company has yet achieved. Has Uber left its rivals Google and Tesla behind?

Uber’s Pittsburgh fleet, which will be supervised by humans in the driver’s seat for the time being, consists of specially modified Volvo XC90 sport-utility vehicles outfitted with dozens of sensors that use cameras, lasers, radar, and GPS receivers.

Cyclotron Spokeless Smart Bike has 10 Bluetooth Sensors

Looking like a real life TRON light cycle, the Cyclotron spokeless carbon-fibre smart bike is straight out of the future. A Kickstarter project currently seeking funding, the Cyclotron team claim this is the future of cycling – and it’s easy to see why…

All this functionality is controlled through the Cyclo App, which hooks up with the 10 Bluetooth sensors scattered around the bike. After learning your riding habits, it’ll give manually geared riders up-and-downshift suggestions, while electronic geared bikes get fully automatic shifting through the app.

BMW uses Connected Drive to pair with your home

Autocar reports on how BMW is using its SIM card-based Connected Drive technology to integrate all of its new cars into the Internet of Things by pairing its vehicles with owner’s homes using its Smart Home integration.

You can see if your smoke alarm has gone off because you’ll get a notification in the car, or you can see if there’s a water leak and then speak to whoever’s in the house to find out what’s going on

Meet Olli – the first self-driving, IoT Smart Bus…

The first self-driving, 3D-printed smart bus has just landed on the streets of Washington, DC. Created by Arizona-based Local Motors in conjunction with IBM Watson Internet of Things, Olli (meetolli.auto) is the first vehicle to have the capability to analyse and learn from transportation data.

Using IBM Watson technology, the bus will be able to answer questions about how it works, where it is going and how it makes decisions, Local Motors said. Passengers will also be able to ask Olli about destinations, such as “Olli, can you take me downtown?”

Brompton folding bikes joins the Internet of Things

A ‘hack day’ held with IoT platform company EVRYTHNG could see Brompton folding bikes joining the Internet of Things as the two companies explored together the possibilities of a connected bike. Joon Ian Wong over at digital news outlet Quartz tells us how it went.

application ideas included tracking air quality and other environmental information, so riders could gauge pollution on a route; an app that would send an emergency message if it detected a sudden impact to the bike; and a program that would automatically turn on a house’s lights and phone the owner if unwanted motion was detected.
